Für diese Spiele wurde die 1952 eröffnete Anlage grundlegend umgebaut: Die Kapazität wuchs auf über 83.000. Auch die olympische Feuerschale und die Fernsehkabine „Palomar“ stammen aus dieser Umbauphase.

Ein dunkles Kapitel bleibt der 26. Mai 1985: Im Tunnel 29 beim Finale zwischen Pumas und América kam es zu einem Gedränge, das acht Menschenleben forderte.

Bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1986 trug das Stadion vier Partien aus, darunter das 1:1 zwischen Italien und Frankreich. Auch die Panamerikanischen Spiele 1955 und 1975 sowie die Universiade 1979 gastierten hier.

Bevor die Pumas der UNAM zum alleinigen Hausherrn wurden, teilten sich in den 1950er und 60er Jahren auch América, Necaxa, Atlante und die mexikanische Nationalmannschaft den Rasen. Zuletzt wich in der Clausura 2025 sogar Cruz Azul vorübergehend hierher aus.
