Über den Spieler
Die Leihe zu Boca Juniors brachte Martín Payero die Titel seiner bisherigen Laufbahn. Am 14. Juli 2022 wechselte er vom englischen Klub Middlesbrough für die Saison 2022/23 nach Buenos Aires, kostenlos und mit Kaufoption. Noch im selben Jahr gewann er mit Boca die argentinische Meisterschaft und die Supercopa Argentina. Im Oktober 2022 erzielte er gegen Aldosivi sein erstes Tor für den Klub. Die Fans wählten ihn danach zum besten Spieler der Partie.
Angefangen hatte er bei Banfield. Dort durchlief er die Nachwuchsmannschaften und debütierte 2017 bei den Profis. Für Banfield zählte er zu den wichtigen Spielern. Für die Saison 2019/20 wurde er an Talleres de Córdoba ausgeliehen. Mit der argentinischen U23 nahm er an den Olympischen Spielen 2020 teil und kam dort dreimal zum Einsatz.
Am 5. August 2021 wechselte er nach Middlesbrough. Die Ablöse wurde auf rund 7 Millionen Euro beziffert. Er absolvierte 15 Spiele und traf einmal.
Am 1. September 2023 verpflichtete ihn Udinese für rund 3 Millionen Euro. Am 22. August 2025 verlieh der Klub ihn für die Saison 2025/26 an US Cremonese. Im Juli 2026 gehörte er zu einem Geschäft, in dem Udinese auch Iker Bravo und Jordan Zemura an Watford abgab; alle drei Spieler gehören der Familie Pozzo. Am 31. Juli 2026 unterschrieb Payero bei Watford einen Vertrag bis zum 30. Juni 2028.
