Kaum eine Arena hat ihren Namen so oft nach politischen Vorzeichen gewechselt wie diese in Kiew: Rotes Stadion nach Trotzki hieß sie bei der Eröffnung, ab 1935 nach Stanislaw Kossior, ab 1941 nach Nikita Chruschtschow, dazwischen schlicht Republikanisches oder Allukrainisches Stadion. Erst 1996 setzte sich der heutige Name NSC Olimpijskyj durch.

Die Kapazität wuchs in großen Sprüngen mit der Sowjetunion mit: von 14 000 Plätzen bei der Eröffnung 1923 über 50 000 nach dem Umbau von 1941 bis auf 100 062 zu den Olympischen Spielen 1980. Genau diese Zahl markiert bis heute den Zuschauerrekord der Arena, aufgestellt am 2.

Zwei kontinentale Endspiele hat das Olimpijskyj seither beherbergt: das EM-Finale 2012 zwischen Spanien und Italien (4:0) und das Champions-League-Finale 2018, in dem Real Madrid den FC Liverpool 3:1 bezwang. Neben der Nationalmannschaft und Dynamo Kiew, die hier ohnehin beheimatet sind, trägt zusätzlich Schachtjor Donezk seine Heimspiele hier aus. Der Rasen wurde zuletzt im Juli 2021 erneuert, nachdem 2011 bereits Rollrasen aus der Slowakei verlegt worden war.
