Stadium
NSC Olimpiyskiy
Formerly: Red Stadium named after L. Trotsky, Red Stadium, Republican Stadium named after Stanislav Kosior, Republican, Republican Stadium named after Nikita Khrushchev, All-Ukrainian Stadium, Central Stadium, Republican Stadium
Few grounds anywhere have changed their name as often as this one. The current name, NSC Olimpiyskiy, has only been in use since 1996.
From 14,000 at opening it grew in stages to more than 100,000 for the 1980 Olympics, then came down twice: to 83,450 once seating replaced the old benches in 1999, and to 70,050 after the rebuild for Euro 2012, when wider concourses and extra VIP boxes took priority over raw numbers. The pitch was relaid with turf brought in from Slovakia for that reconstruction and refreshed again in 2021.
Concerts have filled it too, among them Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
