About Cricket

How a match unfolds

Cricket is a bat-and-ball contest born in sixteenth-century southern England, now played across the Commonwealth. A match pits two teams against one another, each trying to outscore the other. The game splits into innings: one side bats while the other bowls and fields, then they swap. A standard Test match lasts five days, with six hours of play each day, though limited-overs formats compress action into a single day or evening.

Scoring runs and winning

Batsmen score runs by hitting the ball and running between the wickets, or by striking it to the boundary for four or six runs. A team wins by accumulating more runs than its opponent. If a side is bowled out or reaches its overs limit, the other team chases that target. In limited-overs cricket, such as Twenty20, the team batting second wins if they surpass the total before their allotted twenty overs expire.

Offences and dismissals

The fielding side removes a batsman through dismissal. Common methods include bowled, caught, leg before wicket, and run out. Each dismissal reduces the batting team’s strength, making it harder to chase a target. Bowlers must deliver legal balls; no-ball and wide calls penalise illegal deliveries, adding extra runs to the batting side.

Team structure and substitutions

Each team fields eleven players. Substitutions are restricted: a player who leaves the field for injury may return only under strict conditions, and there are no general substitutions during play. This constraint forces teams to manage fitness carefully throughout the match.

Tournament arrangements

International cricket features several formats. Tests are the longest form, played over five days. One Day Internationals last one day, with each team batting for fifty overs. Twenty20 matches are shorter still, lasting about three hours, with twenty overs per side. Major tournaments include the Cricket World Cup, held every four years, and the T20 World Cup, which rotates hosts. These events bring together national teams competing for titles, drawing large crowds and global attention.
