The Indian Premier League stands as the apex of Indian domestic cricket, operating as a closed franchise network distinct from the traditional state-based structure. It functions independently of the Ranji Trophy, serving as the premier Twenty20 competition governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The league features ten city-based franchises, including Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, and Delhi Capitals. Unlike regional associations, these teams are acquired through an open auction system for player acquisition, creating a high-value commercial model. There is no promotion or relegation within the league, allowing franchises to operate with long-term stability.
Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams, each having won five titles. As of the 2026 season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the current champions, having also won the 2025 title. The season format involves a league stage where each team plays 14 matches, followed by a playoff system comprising Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final.
The competition is distinct from other leagues due to its significant global player participation, making it the most commercially successful cricket league in the world. Notable records include Virat Kohli holding the record for most runs in a single season and Harshal Patel and Dwayne Bravo sharing the record for most wickets in a single season.
