The short version

How the ranking is built
The order is set by the main metric of the sport — currently Points per game. It is reduced to a per-match value, so a side from a short competition stays comparable with one from a long league, and nobody leads simply by playing more. Metrics differ by sport: where the data provider sends no league points, the ranking is built on win percentage and the points column is not shown at all — an empty column is worse than none. Every figure comes from the league tables shown on competition pages; there is no second calculation. Each team appears once, in the competition where it has played most, and only with at least 5 matches played.
What the ranking does not show
The ranking shows competition efficiency, not absolute strength. League strength is not taken into account: three points per game in a second division count exactly as much as in a top league, so comparisons across competitions need care — each team is shown with its own competition. There are no adjustments for opponent strength, home advantage or how recent a match was. Friendlies and competitions without tables are left out.
