Sharks

Siya Kolisi's name attaches to more shirts than one, but the black and white of Durban is where his rugby began. The club he came through traces back to the Natal Rugby Union, formed in 1890, and took the name Natal Sharks in 1995. Three years later, the professional side became simply the Sharks, running alongside a separate provincial team that kept competing for the Currie Cup.

That older competition is where the club has done its heaviest lifting: nine Currie Cup titles between 1990 and 2024. The most recent arrived in the same season the club finally added a European trophy, the EPCR Challenge Cup, won in 2023–24. Super Rugby itself has been less kind — four runner-up finishes, in 1996, 2001, 2007 and 2012.
