The Game and its Duration

Rugby union is a contact sport that originated in nineteenth-century England. Two teams of fifteen players compete on a rectangular pitch. A standard match lasts eighty minutes, split into two halves of forty minutes each. There is no stoppage clock; the referee allows play to continue through minor infringements, meaning matches often run longer than the scheduled time. The objective is simple: score more points than the opposition by the final whistle.

Scoring and Field Position

Points come from three main actions. A try, worth five points, requires grounding the ball in the opponent’s in-goal area. After a try, the scoring team takes a conversion kick worth two points, taken from a position parallel to where the try was scored. If a team cannot reach the try line, they may kick the ball over the crossbar and between the uprights for three points, known as a penalty goal or drop goal. These points determine the winner; if scores are level at the end of regulation, extra time follows, usually consisting of two ten-minute halves.

Offences and Penalties

The game is governed by strict laws regarding physical contact. Forward passes are illegal; the ball must be passed backward. High tackles, dangerous throws, and collapsing a scrum are penalised. When a foul occurs, the referee awards a free kick or penalty to the non-offending side. A penalty allows the team a chance at three points via a kick at goal, or they may opt for a scrum to restart play. Repeated offences can lead to yellow cards, sending a player to the sin-bin for ten minutes, or red cards for serious dismissals.

Substitutions and Structure

Each side fields fifteen players, divided into forwards and backs. Substitutions are permitted but limited to protect player safety and maintain competitive balance. Typically, eight substitutes are allowed per team, though this varies slightly depending on the specific competition rules. Players can be swapped for injury or tactical reasons, but once a player leaves the field, they usually cannot return, except in cases of head injury assessments.

Tournaments and Variations

The sport features several international competitions. The Rugby World Cup is the premier event, held every four years. Regional championships include the Six Nations in Europe and the Rugby Championship in the southern hemisphere. While union is the dominant form, rugby sevens—a variant with seven players per side—has gained prominence since joining the Olympic programme in 2016. This faster version focuses on speed and endurance, offering a different perspective on the same core skills.
