Racing 92, Toulon and Perpignan fill in the rest of the rivalry.

The club traces back to Marcel Michelin, son of the tyre firm's co-founder, who set it up in October 1911 under the name AS Michelin. A ban on corporate names in sport forced the change to AS Montferrand in 1922, and the current name, ASM Clermont Auvergne, arrived only in 2004. The yellow and blue kit is a leftover of that Michelin origin, fused with Montferrand's own colours, and gave the team its nickname, Les Jaunards.

The club specialised in coming second: twelve lost Top 14 finals between 1936 and 2019 before Clermont finally broke through in 2010, then again in 2017.

Ownership changed shape in June 2023, when the Compagnie Financière Michelin bought out the remaining shares from ASM Omnisports and put in €11 million to steady the finances, closing the loop back to the family that founded the club. Damian Penaud now leads the current side out at the Stade Marcel-Michelin, chasing a first Top 14 title since 2017.
