How the Match Unfolds

A handball match runs for sixty minutes, split into two halves of thirty minutes each. Between these halves teams take a fifteen-minute break. The clock stops only for serious injuries or when the referee judges a foul to be intentional, a rule designed to prevent time-wasting. This stoppage time adds up quickly, often extending the game beyond the hour.

Scoring and the Field

Seven players occupy the court for each side: six field players and one goalkeeper. The objective is simple in theory but complex in execution. Players move the ball by passing or dribbling, but they cannot hold it for more than three seconds or take more than three steps without bouncing it. The goal is to throw the ball into the opponent’s net. A goal counts as one point. Shots from outside the six-metre line, known as the two-metre line, are worth one point, just like close-range finishes. However, a shot taken from inside the nine-metre area, the three-metre line, is also one point. The distinction matters because defenders cluster tightly inside the nine-metre zone.

Fouls and Penalties

Physical contact is frequent, but there are strict limits. A player cannot push, hold, or trip an opponent. If a defender commits a foul inside the six-metre area, or prevents a clear scoring chance, the referee awards a penalty throw. This is taken from the seven-metre line, with only the goalkeeper allowed to defend. The shooter has a clear path to the goal. Less severe infractions result in free throws or yellow cards for warning, and red cards for ejection. Two yellow cards in one match lead to a red card and suspension for the remainder of the game.

Tournament Structure

The sport is governed globally by the International Handball Federation. Major tournaments follow a group stage format followed by knockout rounds. At the Olympic Games, teams are divided into pools. The top teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals. The World Championship operates similarly but includes more nations. European competitions rely on qualification leagues that span several years. Winners of these qualifiers earn spots in the final tournament. The structure ensures that only the most consistent teams reach the final stages.
