About

The Polish Men's Handball I Liga operates as the third tier of the national hierarchy, sitting below the professionalized Liga Centralna. The structure shifted in 2021 when the Polish Handball Federation established the new second division, moving the I Liga down a level after it had served as the second tier since the 2001/2002 season. This reform aimed to raise commercial standards, requiring clubs in the upper echelon to operate as commercial entities.

Competition is organized into four geographical groups, designated A, B, C, and D. Teams contest a round-robin format within their specific group during the regular campaign. Progression is determined through a distinct knockout stage known as the Turniej Mistrzów (Champions Tournament). The victors of each group advance to this final phase held in a single location. The winner of the Turniej Mistrzów secures direct promotion to the Liga Centralna. The runner-up from this tournament enters a playoff match against the team finishing 13th in the second tier.

Relegation involves the bottom-placed teams within the groups, though specific rules vary compared to the higher tiers. Historically, clubs such as Nielba Wągrowiec and Stal Mielec have featured prominently in the modern era of the competition. The current season features six clubs including Alcobendas and Azoty-Pulawy II. The league remains officially known as I Liga without a title sponsor, distinguishing it from the ORLEN Superliga above it.
