About

The Danish Women's Handball League stands as the premier professional handball competition for women in Denmark. Operating as the top tier under the Danish Handball Federation, it holds the status of the 1st level in the national pyramid. The tournament was established in 1965, replacing a regional district-based system that had run for three decades prior.

The structure features a double round-robin regular season for the participating teams. After this phase, the top eight clubs advance to a playoff stage known as *Slutspil*. These qualifiers are divided into two groups based on their final standing in the regular campaign. A unique feature of this stage is the point carry-over system, where higher-ranked teams begin the playoffs with additional points to secure their position. The winners of each group progress to best-of-three semi-finals and finals to determine the champion.

At the lower end of the table, the competition manages promotion and relegation through a specific mechanism. The team finishing in 14th place faces direct relegation to the 1. Division. Meanwhile, clubs ranked between 9th and 13th enter a qualification tournament against the winner of the second tier to decide the final spot in the top flight.

Historically, Viborg HK holds the record for success with 14 titles. Other notable winners include FIF København with 12 championships and Team Esbjerg, who claimed the most recent title in the 2025–26 season. The league has undergone several name changes due to sponsorship agreements over the years. It is currently ranked 4th in Europe by the EHF. The competition expanded its field from 12 to 14 teams in 2021 to accommodate the current format.
