Los Angeles, 1984: China's women stepped onto the Olympic handball court for the first time and left with bronze. The team had grown out of the China Handball Federation, set up in 1979 and admitted to the International Handball Federation a year later, drawing its players from provincial sides rather than any single city — Beijing serves mainly as a training base, at the Olympic Sports Center's handball hall.

That 1984 squad carried the run. Wang Linwei scored 11 goals across the tournament, and goalkeeper Liu Yumei was named the best at that year's national championship. China reached the Olympics only twice more, finishing fifth in 1996 and eighth in 2004, and has not qualified since a sixth-place finish in 2008. Eighth in 1990 remains the best return at the World Championship.

The Asian Games brought ten Asian Championship runner-up finishes without a single title, and only one Asian Games gold, won on home soil in Guangzhou in 2010.
