«The Mammoths»
The Stade des Alpes has hosted Grenoble since 2008, a 20,068-seat ground the club shares with the city's football side, Grenoble Foot 38.
The rugby side traces back to 1892, born out of a merger of local clubs, and its forwards have earned the club more nicknames than most. Earlier, in 1954, the French press called the side La Légion étrangère after it won the national championship with a squad built around foreign internationals — still the only title in the club's history.
A second final, in 1993, went the other way: Grenoble lost 14–11 to Castres Olympique, and thirteen years later the referee, Daniel Salles, admitted he had got a key call wrong.
Vincent Clerc, France's record try-scorer, started out here. Edmond Vellat's name belongs to an earlier era still — he scored the try that gave France its first ever win over England, in 1927. More recently the academy has produced Killian Geraci, a lock who won the Under-20 World Cup with France and went on to senior caps.
Oyonnax provides the fixture supporters mark on the calendar first, the Derby Rhônalpin.
