Montauban

Montauban won its only French Championship in 1967, beating CA Bègles 11-3.

The club's more recent history has been written in the second division: three Pro D2 titles, in 2001, 2006 and 2025, mark the points at which it climbed back to the top flight after each fall from it. Laurent Labit and Laurent Travers took charge for the 2006 promotion.

The 2010 relegation was the sharpest of these falls. The professional arm, then playing as Montauban Tarn-et-Garonne XV, went bankrupt and dropped to Fédérale 1, the amateur game's top tier, forcing the club to rebuild from a level it had not occupied in generations. It won that division in 2014, beating RC Massy 18-14, one step on a climb that did not reach Pro D2 promotion form again until 2025's return to the Top 14.

Stade Sapiac gave the club its nickname, Les Sapiacains, and its identity long before either promotion or relegation defined it. Green and black have been the colours since a rugby side split off from what had started, in November 1903, as a general sports club for the town.
