Montpellier

Two clubs shared the pitch and the city before Montpellier's rugby side existed as one body: Stade Montpelliérain and the rugby arm of Montpellier Paillade Sport Club went their separate ways until 1986, when they merged into Montpellier Hérault Rugby. The name it settled on, Les Cistes, points south rather than to either predecessor — the cistus is a Mediterranean shrub, and the club's blue is described locally as bleu méditerranée.

Promotion arrived properly in 2003, when Montpellier topped Pro D2 and returned to French rugby's top flight. Losing finals became a habit before winning one did: Stade Toulousain beat them in the 2011 Top 14 final, and Castres Olympique beat them again in 2018. The wait ended in 2022, when Montpellier beat that same Castres side 29–10 to take the title. In Europe, the Challenge Cup has suited them better than the Top 14 podium — they lifted it in 2016 against Harlequins and again in 2021, edging Leicester Tigers 18–17.

Fulgence Ouedraogo came through the club's own academy and stayed long enough to make more appearances for Montpellier than anyone else, 340 of them. Benoît Paillaugue built his own record from the boot and the base of the scrum. Against RC Toulon, the fixture carries a name, the Derby de la Méditerranée.

What holds all of it together traces back to that 1986 merger — two Montpellier clubs deciding the city needed one voice in rugby, not two.
