Super Rugby Pacific operates as a top-tier professional rugby union competition within the Southern Hemisphere. The tournament evolved from its original Super 12 format in 1996 into a closed franchise system that pools talent across national borders. This structure distinguishes it from domestic provincial contests like New Zealand’s NPC or South Africa’s Currie Cup. Teams represent regions rather than traditional clubs, a model that contrasts sharply with the club-based United Rugby Championship.
The competition currently features ten franchises competing in a single unified table. Participants include New Zealand sides the Blues, Chiefs, and Crusaders, alongside Australian representatives the Brumbies. The field also incorporates Pacific Island teams such as Fijian Drua. Each team plays fourteen matches during the regular season before the top eight advance to a playoff series. A structural shift is scheduled for 2027, which will increase fixtures to sixteen matches per team and reduce the finals field to six teams.
The Crusaders hold the record for most titles with thirteen wins. The Blues secured the most recent championship in 2024 by defeating the Chiefs. The format deliberately avoids pool play, favouring a straightforward league table followed by knockout finals. This approach differs from European competitions that utilize group stages. Administration remains under SANZAAR, although the entity’s composition has changed with South Africa and Argentina withdrawing to focus on the United Rugby Championship. Regional title sponsorship varies, with entities like Investec and Vodafone supporting specific markets rather than a single global partner.
