About

The WXV 1 served as the top tier of the WXV, an annual global women's rugby union competition founded by World Rugby and launched in 2023. It functioned as the premier international tournament for the sport, sitting above the WXV 2 and WXV 3 tiers. The competition was discontinued after the 2024 edition and replaced in 2026 by the WXV Global Series.

The 2023 and 2024 editions featured six national teams, including the Ireland Women, Scotland Women, France Women, South Africa Women, Wales Women, and New Zealand Women. Qualification was based on regional performance: the top three teams from the Six Nations Championship (Europe) and the top three from the Pacific Four Series (Oceania/Americas). The format was a cross-pool round-robin. Teams were divided into two pools of three. Each team played exactly three matches against the three teams in the opposite pool. There was no full round-robin (playing every other team) and no group stage knockout; the winner was determined by a single points table based on standard rugby union scoring (4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, plus try and losing bonus points).

In the original WXV structure (2023–2024), WXV 1 had no promotion or relegation for the first two cycles, as the teams were selected by qualification. The inaugural 2023 tournament was hosted in New Zealand. England won the title, defeating New Zealand 33–12 in the final. The 2024 tournament was hosted in Canada. England won again, defeating Canada in the final. England is the only team to have won the tournament twice.
