The HSBC SVNS is the premier global circuit for international rugby sevens, organized by World Rugby. Formerly the World Rugby Sevens Series, the competition was founded in 1999 with the inaugural 1999–2000 season. It sits at the top tier of the global rugby sevens pyramid and serves as the primary pathway for Olympic qualification. The season consists of six regular-season tournaments followed by a Grand Final. Teams accumulate points across all events to determine the series champion. The Grand Final features the top eight teams in a knockout format. Promotion and relegation exist between the HSBC SVNS and the second-tier HSBC SVNS 2. The bottom core teams compete in a play-off against top teams from the second tier to determine core status for the following season. A specific event is held in Spain, hosted in Valladolid at the Estadio José Zorrilla since the 2021–22 season. This global series features national teams rather than club sides and operates as a cumulative points-based circuit. The 2025–26 season reduced the core field to eight teams per gender. New Zealand is the most successful nation, having won the men's series fourteen times. The current reigning champions are South Africa for the men and New Zealand for the women. Notable reforms include the rebranding to HSBC SVNS in 2023–24.
