Steaua Bucuresti

Florică Murariu captained Romania at the 1987 Rugby World Cup.

Steaua has won 24 national championships and 16 Cupa României titles. Abroad, the side took the FIRA European Cup twice, in 1966 and 1973.

The fixture that matters most is against Dinamo București, known as the Eternul Derby, a rivalry that goes back to the Cold War split between the Army and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, each with its own club to send out. Rapid București has been a rival too, though a lesser one.

Games are played on the rugby pitch inside the Complexul Sportiv Steaua in Ghencea, a 2,000-seat ground standing beside the much larger football stadium on the same site, rebuilt in 2021 to hold over 31,000.

The rugby section was never its own beginning. It was set up in 1948 under CSA Steaua București, the sports club the Romanian Army had founded a year earlier, and the military backing is still there in the old nicknames — Militarii among them — and in the red and blue the team has worn since.
