SCM Timisoara

SCM Timișoara go into this SuperLiga campaign having lifted the title again in 2024 and added the Cupa României in 2025. Where Baia Mare or Dinamo București can point to a run of good seasons, Timișoara point to seven league championships, the first coming back in 1972.

The club started out in 1949 as CSUT, and only became SCM Rugby Timișoara in 2020 after passing through a spell as Timișoara Saracens under a partnership with the London club. The badge and the shirt changed more than once; the yellow and blue on the pitch at Stadionul Gheorghe Rășcanu did not.

What turned a team with one old title from 1972 into a team with seven was a South African. Chester Williams, a Springbok World Cup winner, took over as head coach in 2012 and again from 2015 to 2017, and under him Timișoara ended a wait of four decades between championships. Sosene Anesi followed a similar path in reverse, arriving from New Zealand as a player in 2013 and returning as head coach in 2018.

The fixtures against CSM Știința Baia Mare have decided more than one league final. Ground capacity at 1,000 keeps those occasions tight rather than grand.
