Iuliu Hațieganu still carries the ground's older shorthand around Cluj-Napoca. The club has occasionally shifted the biggest occasions to Cluj Arena, across town, but Hațieganu remains the address people associate with the team.
Students founded the club in 1949, first under the name Știința Cluj before it took the Universitatea identity it has carried since. The university anchoring never changed.
What it has not done is win. Four fourth-place finishes in the national championship, spread across 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2003, mark the closest the club has come to a Liga Națională title, and three runner-up finishes in the Cupa României, in 1998, 1999 and 2002, are as near as it has got to a cup. Both cluster in the same decade, a period when the side pushed hard against the ceiling it never broke through.
