Beddau

Gethin Jenkins was thirteen when he first pulled on a jersey at Mount Pleasant Park, on Castellau Road, years before the same green and gold got him 129 caps for Wales and five for the British and Irish Lions. Beddau has kept doing that quietly ever since.

The current club dates to a reformation in the 1951–52 season, rebuilding a side that had first taken shape around 1900 and folded during the Second World War. What followed was less a steady climb than a series of sharp bursts: five straight Mid District Cups from 2003–04 to 2007–08, a league title in 2006–07 that should have carried Beddau into the Welsh Premiership but did not, because Mount Pleasant Park failed the Welsh Rugby Union's ground criteria. Members upheld that ruling at an extraordinary general meeting, and the club dropped instead into the Swalec Championship to start again.

Promotion finally came back in 2014–15, under Lee Davies and Ben Daniels with Glenn Slater captaining the side up from Division One East Central.

None of it means as much locally as the fixture with Pontypridd, the derby with no nickname that doesn't need one.
