Merthyr lifted the title in 2025 and again in 2026, adding to the run they started when they won the competition's first ever season in 2017 and held on to it in 2018 and 2019 for a club that spent the 1990s working its way up from Division 5. Merthyr operate as a feeder club for Cardiff Rugby.
A players' strike dropped them out of Division 1, and it took three seasons to climb back. Division 1 East and the SWALEC Plate both won in the same campaign, sending them into the WRU Championship, which they then won outright in 2015–16 to reach the Premiership.
