The premier women’s rugby union competition in Australia is run by Rugby Australia. It was established in 2018 to replace the National Women's Championship and operates as a closed franchise system with no promotion or relegation. The competition sits above state-based premier leagues in the Australian rugby pyramid.
The current season features five teams competing in a single round-robin regular season followed by a finals series where the top four teams contest the championship. The participating clubs are NSW Waratahs Women, Queensland Women, President's XV Women, Fijiana Drua Women, and Brumbies Women. The Fijian Drua joined the competition in 2022, expanding the field from its original configuration.
NSW Waratahs Women hold the record for success in the tournament, claiming seven titles since its inception. They are also the reigning champions. The competition transitioned from amateur to professional status gradually, introducing minimum player payments in 2023 and targeting full-time contracts for 2025. It was rebranded from Super W to Super Rugby Women's in 2024.
While distinct from New Zealand's Super Rugby Aupiki, the champions of both competitions now meet in a cross-border Champions Final. This arrangement highlights the growing stature of the Australian competition beyond its domestic borders. The focus remains on providing a high-level platform for women's rugby within Australia, serving as the pinnacle for female players in the country.
