Premiership Rugby stands as the premier level of the English rugby union system. Operating under the commercial title of the Gallagher Premiership, the competition is run by Premiership Rugby Ltd, an entity established by the member clubs in 2001. The structure currently accommodates ten clubs, a reduction from earlier iterations, with Bath, Bristol, Exeter Chiefs, Gloucester, Harlequins, and Leicester Tigers among the participants. The season follows a round-robin format where every side faces each opponent twice, resulting in eighteen fixtures per team. This regular campaign determines seeding for the knockout phase. The four highest-placed teams progress to semi-finals, culminating in the Premiership Final which crowns the annual champion. Leicester Tigers hold the record for success in this era, having secured the title eleven times. Bath Rugby claimed the most recent championship in the 2024–25 season after defeating their rivals in the conclusive match. Financial regulations play a significant role in the competition's operation. A strict salary cap governs spending, set lower than that of the French Top 14. The league also implements specific incentives to encourage the development of home-grown players. Movement between tiers remains possible, linking the Premiership with the second-tier RFU Championship. The lowest-ranked team in the top flight faces relegation, while the champion of the lower division contests a promotion play-off. These contests are subject to rigorous financial and infrastructure licensing criteria, ensuring competitive balance and stability across the levels.
