The Seven's World Series is a specific round within the HSBC SVNS, the premier annual international rugby sevens circuit organized by World Rugby. It is not a standalone domestic league but an international tournament hosted in France, featuring national teams. The event was first held in 1995 in Melun, organized by the French Barbarians and sponsored by Air France. It joined the inaugural IRB Sevens World Series in the 1999–2000 season. The tournament has been held in various locations, including Paris (Stade Jean-Bouin), Bordeaux, and Toulouse (Stade Ernest-Wallon). As of the 2025–26 season, the SVNS features 8 core teams: Argentina, Australia, Fiji, France, Kenya, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain. The format consists of a round-robin group stage followed by knockout playoffs. The SVNS circuit operates with a promotion and relegation system between the top-tier SVNS and the second-tier Sevens Challenger Series, where the bottom four SVNS teams compete against the top four Challenger teams for spots in the next season's main circuit. South Africa and New Zealand hold the record for most wins at the France Sevens event, with three titles each. France won the 2026 tournament in Bordeaux, defeating New Zealand 14-5. The SVNS differs from the Rugby World Cup Sevens, which is a quadrennial knockout tournament crowning the definitive world champion, whereas the SVNS is an annual circuit with cumulative points leading to a Grand Final. The French domestic sevens competition, the Championnat de France de rugby à sept, is a separate entity organized by the French Rugby Federation, featuring club teams in a multi-stage knockout format.
