The Currie Cup is South Africa’s premier domestic rugby union competition, established in 1891. The tournament sits at the top tier of the national pyramid, serving as the highest level of play for provincial unions. Unlike the franchise-based United Rugby Championship, this event remains open to all regional bodies, offering a distinct pathway for non-URC teams such as the Griquas and Pumas.
The season structure has shifted significantly following recent reforms. Currently, the Premier Division comprises eight sides: the four franchises involved in the international league alongside the top four finishers from the separate SA Cup. These teams contest a single round-robin schedule before advancing to semi-finals and a final. The First Division hosts the remaining provincial unions, who follow a similar format with their own playoffs. Qualification for the elite tier is now determined by SA Cup standings rather than traditional relegation playoffs, a change implemented alongside the 2024 calendar realignment.
Western Province holds the record for success with 34 titles, though the 2025 crown belonged to the Griquas after they defeated the Lions in a close final. The competition boasts a long history, with its inaugural official tournament taking place in 1892. Historical records highlight Western Province’s 142–0 victory over Griqualand West in 1905 as the largest winning margin, while John Daniels remains the all-time leading try scorer with 74 attempts.
The tournament operates during the July–September window, aligning with the European rugby calendar. This scheduling allows URC franchises to field development squads or first teams depending on their international commitments. For provincial unions outside the top tier, the Currie Cup provides the primary platform for competitive rugby within the country.
