Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria seats 51,762. The 2010 final, against the Stormers, was played in Soweto rather than at Loftus, because the country was preparing for the World Cup. The Bulls won it 25–17 away from home. Their supporters, who call the side "Bulljie", had already seen a more nervous night in 2007. Bryan Habana scored the winning try in the dying moments against the Sharks, and the final finished 20–19.

The franchise is younger than the name suggests. In 1938 the Northern Transvaal union broke away from the Transvaal Rugby Football Union to stand on its own, and under that name it played the Currie Cup until 1997. That year the union became the Blue Bulls and the professional Bulls were set up for Super 12.

The academy has supplied a good part of the modern side. Handré Pollard and Jesse Kriel both came through it. Morné Steyn is the club's all-time leading point-scorer, and his kicking is part of why the close finals went the Bulls' way.

The Lions, across the Highveld, provide the fiercest fixture. It is known as the Highveld Derby or the Jukskei Derby.

Not every season has gone well. In 2002 the Bulls failed to win a single game in Super 12. Since Steyn's era they have added only the 2020 Super Rugby Unlocked title. The last Super Rugby title, in the standard competition, dates from 2010, and the last Currie Cup from 2009.
