The 1872 Cup gives away everything about how Edinburgh see themselves against Glasgow Warriors: the trophy is named for the year the two sides first met, when Edinburgh District played Glasgow District in the country's first inter-district match. That fixture predates the club as it exists now by more than a century — Edinburgh only turned professional in 1996, ten years before a brief and troubled spell as a private franchise. Owned by the Carruthers brothers, the club was rebranded 'Edinburgh Gunners' in 2006, but a funding row with the Scottish Rugby Union brought back the old name within a year, and 'The Gunners' survives only as a nickname tied to the city's military past.

On the pitch, the identity has been built more by individuals than by silverware. Chris Paterson remains the club's all-time top scorer, while Allan Jacobsen holds the appearance record from a front row that shaped the team's forward reputation for years. The honours list reads thinner: an Interdistrict Championship won three times by the turn of the millennium, then a long run of near-misses — runners-up finishes in the Celtic Cup, the old Celtic League and the European Challenge Cup. The 2014-15 Challenge Cup final stands out among those, the first time any Scottish side had reached a major European final, coming a few seasons after a Heineken Cup semi-final appearance had already shown the squad could compete at that level.

Murrayfield, shared with the international side and dwarfing the crowds a club match usually draws inside it, remains the fixture of home weekends. Edinburgh continue to build seasons around the Warriors derby and a push back toward the European nights that produced their best results a decade ago.
