About

The United Rugby Championship brings together franchises from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy and South Africa into a single professional structure. It ranks as the top tier for these nations, sitting above domestic competitions in England and France regarding its cross-border reach. The tournament operates as a closed franchise system, meaning there is no promotion or relegation to or from the league. This format distinguishes it significantly from the English Premiership and the French Top 14, which rely on traditional promotion and relegation mechanisms.

Established in 2001 under the name Celtic League, the competition has evolved through several rebrandings before adopting its current title in 2021. The season runs from September through May, with clubs playing 18 regular-season matches divided into regional pools. After the group stage, the top eight sides enter a single-elimination playoff culminating in a Grand Final. Leinster Rugby holds the record for most titles, having won the competition ten times as of the 2025–26 season.

Current participants include Benetton, Cardiff Rugby, Connacht, Dragons, Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors. These clubs compete alongside others from the southern hemisphere and the British Isles. The league covers a vast geographic area, linking European rugby powerhouses with emerging South African franchises. Its structure allows teams to maintain regular fixtures within their regions while competing in a unified championship. The official website for the competition is unitedrugby.com.
