Malleny Park sits in Balerno, out on the western edge of Edinburgh rather than in it, and holds 2,000 — a ground built to the scale of the club rather than the city it represents. Currie moved rugby out here after an open meeting in April 1970, with Robert Kirkwood among those who set the club up; the black jersey with thin gold hoops was picked deliberately, to stand apart from the shirts already worn by the other Edinburgh sides.

For most of its life the club worked its way up through the lower divisions one title at a time — Division 7 in 1980–81, Division 4 in 1985–86, Division 3 in 1986–87 — before the step that mattered: the Division 2 championship of 1995–96, taken alongside the Tennent's Shield in the same season. That put Currie into the top flight, where it has since won the Premiership three times, in 2006–07, 2009–10 and 2023–24, with a Scottish Cup final lost in between, in 2005–06. In 2017 the club rebranded as Currie Chieftains, a name now used by the Scottish Rugby Union and in match reports alongside the original.

The fixtures that draw the biggest crowds are against the other Edinburgh Premiership clubs — Boroughmuir, Watsonians, Heriot's, Edinburgh Academicals — grouped under the general label of the Edinburgh derby rather than any name specific to Currie itself.

Blair Kinghorn came through here before Edinburgh Rugby and the Scotland jersey, one of a run of players the club has sent into the professional game; Luke Crosbie followed a similar path and has since passed a hundred appearances for Edinburgh. Graham Hogg stayed closer to home — a Scotland cap in his own playing days, then years on as coach and chairman, the kind of figure a club like this is built around rather than through.
