Thirteen Scottish Premiership titles sit against Hawick's name, more than any other club in the league's history, but the one that mattered most to the town came in 2022–23, when Hawick beat Currie 21–18 in the playoff final at Mansfield Park. The relegation of 2009 was the first in the club's history, and it took until 2013, and a 39–38 win over Dundee HSFP in another playoff final, to get back among the top sides. The two Scottish Cups that followed the 2023 title, along with a fourth in 2024, came from a club that had spent most of the professional era rebuilding rather than collecting silverware.

Before there was a league to win, Hawick simply won everything on offer: ten outright Unofficial Championships and four more shared between 1895 and 1972, plus a Border League record that runs to fifteen titles going back to the competition's first year. The rivalry with Melrose and Jed-Forest still carries that history, and the Border derby against either side draws a different kind of crowd to Mansfield Park than an ordinary league fixture.

The club traces itself to 1885, when the rugby-playing members split away from the Hawick and Wilton Cricket Club, though men from the town had already been playing the game for over a decade by then. It has sent 58 players into a Scotland jersey since.

Stuart Hogg came through Hawick before becoming Scotland's leading try-scorer and touring with the British & Irish Lions, a record since passed by another product of the same club, Darcy Graham. But it is Bill McLaren the town remembers longest — a Hawick player before he became the BBC voice that a generation of viewers associated with rugby itself.
