Super Liga Americana operates as the premier professional rugby union tournament for franchises across South America. Organised by Sudamérica Rugby, the competition replaced the amateur-era Campeonato Sudamericano de Clubes de Rugby, which ran from 1985 to 2000. The modern iteration began play in 2021 after an initial launch attempt in 2019 was halted by global health restrictions. It functions as a cross-border league rather than a domestic championship, providing a professional platform for clubs from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
The structure follows a standard progression with a home-and-away round-robin regular season leading into playoff matches. The field has grown from seven participants in 2024 to eight teams for the current 2026 campaign, maintaining a stable format without promotion or relegation. Colombia once held a slot with Cafeteros Pro, though that franchise departed after two seasons. Peru has never secured a permanent place in the modern era.
Peñarol Rugby holds the record for success, claiming victories in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. They retained the title in 2025 by defeating Dogos XV in a closely contested final. The competition underwent a rebranding exercise in 2023 to align with global naming conventions, shifting from the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby acronym to Super Rugby Americas. This change initially aimed to include North American entries, but those teams have since left the fold.
The league remains distinct from national competitions such as Argentina’s Top 12. Its focus is entirely on international club competition within the region. The eight clubs competing this year include Cafeteros Pro, Cobras, Jaguares, Penarol, Selknam, and Yacare XV, alongside others from the host nations.
