About

The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India, founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in September 2007. The inaugural season took place in 2008. The league operates as a closed franchise system, sitting parallel to the traditional domestic pyramid rather than within it; consequently, there is no promotion or relegation. The competition currently features 10 city-based franchises. The season format consists of a double round-robin group stage where each team plays 14 matches, followed by playoffs involving the top four teams: Qualifier 1 (1st vs 2nd), Eliminator (3rd vs 4th), Qualifier 2 (loser of Q1 vs winner of Eliminator), and the Final. The Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the most successful clubs, each holding five titles. As of the 2024 season, the reigning champions are the Kolkata Knight Riders, who defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. The league allows a maximum of 8 overseas players in a 25-player squad, with up to 4 overseas players permitted in the playing XI per match.
