About

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Men's T20 World Cup represents the highest level of achievement in Twenty20 International cricket. Established in 2007, the tournament serves as the definitive global championship for the shortest format of the game. It stands alongside the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship as one of the sport's three major events.

The competition features national teams rather than club sides, distinguishing it from franchise-based leagues. In 2024, the field expanded to twenty nations, divided into four groups of five. Progression follows a clear path: the top two sides from each group move to the Super 8 stage. From there, the leading two teams in each subgroup advance to the semi-finals and the final. Qualification relies on a mix of ICC rankings, automatic spots for previous top performers and host nations, and a structured global qualifier process for associate members.

India holds the record for the most titles, having secured the trophy three times. They are also the first nation to win consecutive championships. The current champion, India, defeated New Zealand in the 2026 final. Other winners include England, who claimed the title in 2010 and 2022, and Australia, who won in 2021. Pakistan won in 2009, while the West Indies captured the cup in 2012 and 2016. Sri Lanka claimed victory in 2014.

The tournament operates on a biennial cycle, typically running for three to four weeks. Host nations have varied globally, ranging from South Africa to the United States. Individual records include Virat Kohli for the most career runs and Shakib Al Hasan for the most wickets. The event remains distinct for its inclusive qualification pathway and its status as the sole global championship for the T20I format.
