Karl Nunes captained West Indies in their first official Test match, against England at Lord's, played from 23 to 26 June 1928. Its governing body joined the Imperial Cricket Conference, now the International Cricket Council (ICC), on 31 May 1926, and the fixture followed once that membership was in place.
West Indies has never been one country's team. It is drawn from a group of Caribbean nations, and Cricket West Indies, formerly the West Indies Cricket Board, runs it from St. John's in Antigua and Barbuda. Matches rotate between islands. Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, is the ground most often named as the centre of Caribbean cricket, with room for around 28,000.
The players, in maroon with green, grey and gold trim, are known as the Windies. That side won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1975 and again in 1979, and reached the 1983 final as well, where it finished runners-up. Sir Vivian Richards and Sir Gordon Greenidge batted for Lloyd, while Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Joel Garner bowled for him.
Brian Lara later set the Test record for the highest individual score, 400 not out. In the Twenty20 (T20) format, Daren Sammy's team won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012, and the side won it again in 2016 with Chris Gayle in the line-up.
The oldest contests are with England and Australia. Against England the series is played for the Richards-Botham Trophy, which was called the Wisden Trophy before it was renamed. Against Australia the prize is the Frank Worrell Trophy.
