Kensington Oval
Bridgetown, Barbados
The pitch square itself is a natural soil mix, a blend of clay, silt and sand sown with Princess Bermuda grass. The outfield is Tifway 419 hybrid, chosen for its density. The entire ground is open-air, no roofing over the stands or the field.
For a long time, the Pickwick Cricket Club leased the land and managed the place. They held on until 2004, when the Barbados Cricket Association took over. The rebuild for the 2007 tournament cost $135 million and was designed by Arup Associates. Floodlights were added two years later, allowing day-night matches. The venue has hosted several major finals, including the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 Final, where England defeated Australia. It also hosted Rihanna's concert in 2011, and the state funeral of Prime Minister David Thompson in November 2010.
The capacity is 28,000 seated spectators. The highest recorded attendance was during the 2007 World Cup Super Eights match between West Indies and England, described as a "full house." The ground is often referred to locally as "The Mecca" of cricket.
