Qualifying no longer means a trip to Kyiv. Since 2022 the age group has not played a fixture on Ukrainian soil, with "home" games shifted to the Stadiumi Niko Dovana in Durrës and the Arena Egnatia in Rrogozhinë, to the Romanian federation's training centre in Buftea and the Anghel Iordănescu stadium in Voluntari, and to the Tarczyński Arena in Wrocław. The NSC Olimpiyskiy in Kyiv, a 70,050-seat ground, remains the side's address on paper only.

The team carries the same nickname as every Ukrainian national side, Yellow-Blues, and wears the same colours: yellow at home, blue away, both kits built around the flag. What sets this group apart in the record books came in 2009, when Ukraine hosted the UEFA European Under-19 Championship and beat England 2-0 in the final under Yuriy Kalitvintsev — the only continental title the age group has won. It had come close once before, losing the 2000 Under-18 final to France. Since then the results read as a string of semi-final exits, in 2004, 2018, 2024 and 2026, without a match played for third place.

The fixture that once mattered most, against Russia, stopped after 2014, when UEFA barred meetings between the two countries' national sides; Germany and Hungary have since become the games this group treats as a measure of itself.

Of the players who came through the age group, one name from the 2009 final still gets mentioned first: Oleksandr Zinchenko, part of that European-winning squad before he went on to a career at senior international level.
