Penang edged past Melaka 1-0 in the FA Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday evening, advancing to the quarter-finals thanks to a second-minute strike from F. Obilor. The visitors held firm despite being reduced to ten men late on, surviving a sustained second-half barrage from the hosts.
Obilor broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, his finish proving decisive on this occasion. Melaka threw everything at the game after that, but the penalty area remained defended with discipline. By then, the visitors had already set about absorbing pressure rather than seeking to extend their lead.
The turning point came near the end when a red card in the 90th minute added drama to an already tense finish. Melaka pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Penang's defence held together under pressure. The hosts had created plenty of chances throughout, yet couldn't find a way through in the crucial moments.
Statistics tell only part of the story here. Melaka registered 128 attacks compared to 79 for Penang, with 12 corners to 7, and dominated possession at 59 per cent. They mustered six shots on target against four for their opponents, but only one found the back of the net. The result means Melaka's campaign comes to an end in the Round of 16, while Penang advances to face whoever emerges from the other tie. The hosts had won their last outing 2-1 against Negeri Sembilan, but this was a different proposition entirely. Cup football has its own rules, and tonight they belonged to the visitors.
