Stadionul Anghel Iordănescu

Voluntari's stadium carries the name of a man who managed Romania at a World Cup. It opened in 2012 as Stadionul Central, built where an earlier ground had once been named for Niță Pintea, a local sub-lieutenant killed in the First World War — the street outside still carries his name.

The arena as it now stands is largely the product of work carried out between 2015 and 2016. That expansion turned a modest local ground into something closer to a proper home for FC Voluntari, a club that has spent most of its history playing in the shadow of Bucharest's bigger names just a few kilometres away.

The pitch is a hybrid surface, a detail worth noting only because so few grounds of this size in Romania have made that investment. Anghel Iordănescu, whose name the stadium now bears, remains one of the few Romanian coaches to have taken the national team to a World Cup, and the renaming reflected that standing rather than any direct tie to the club itself.

What the ground lacks in scale it makes up for in modesty of ambition: it was never built to hold tens of thousands, only to give a growing club in Ilfov county somewhere permanent to play.
