The ground opened on 13 September 1964, replacing the Campo de Zatorre, which had served the city since 1943. It was named Estadio de El Plantío upon opening, adopting its current title in 1983. The capacity swelled to 16,500 by the late 1970s after the addition of two end stands, then dropped to 11,382 in 1991 when standing areas were removed. The 2018–2019 renovation replaced the roofs and the southern stand, converting the venue to an all-seater configuration with a new roof and two large outdoor LED screens on suspended structures above the roof ends. The current official capacity is 12,194 spectators.

The pitch is natural grass. Burgos CF play here in the Segunda División. The all-time attendance record is 11,380 spectators, set on 14 April 2024 during a Segunda División match against Racing de Santander, which Burgos won 1–0. Other high attendances include 10,653 against RCD Mallorca in the Copa del Rey on 8 January 2024 and 9,948 against CD Mirandés on 9 December 2023.

The stadium has also hosted international matches for the Spain U21 national team, including UEFA European Under-21 Championship playoffs against Croatia in 2010 and Denmark in 2012. It hosted a UEFA Women's Euro 2025 qualifying match between Spain and the Czech Republic on 9 April 2024. In 2011, a ceremony honoring Burgos CF legend Lucio Arnáiz was held at the stadium.
