Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo opened on 23 February 1972, built by the Egyptian firm Arab Contractors, timed to host that year's Africa Cup of Nations. It hosted the tournament again, in 2021.

The ground carries the memory of a night that no modern capacity figure can explain: on 29 November 1981, against Morocco, and again on 24 April 1983, against Mozambique, the crowd reached 120,000.

A 2015–16 rebuild, again carried out by Arab Contractors, prepared the venue for the 2016 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, and the pitch has kept its natural grass throughout. The stadium's older name, Stade Omnisports, still surfaces in conversation around the Mfandena neighbourhood where it stands.

Athletics has had its moment here too, with the 1996 African Championships held on the track, and in 2017 the stadium hosted something entirely different: a concert by the Senegalese rapper Booba.
