The brick embankments and terracing came from a design by engineer Nowak, built under the supervision of one Ociepka; the steel main stand followed separately in 1937, designed by engineer Dic and fabricated by the local Huta Piłsudski works.

Twenty thousand at opening became 41,000 after a 1961 overhaul that also relaid the pitch, and on 21 August 1957 the ground held 55,000 for Ruch Chorzów against Polonia Bytom, still its recorded attendance peak. The four floodlight masts raised in 1968, nicknamed świeczki — "candles" — for their 48-metre height, stood until a 1998 relighting nearly quadrupled their output. What the terraces never recovered from was seating: a 1993 bomb-hoax scare put the first plastic chairs, reputedly ex-tram seats, on the main stand, and the seating-out completed between 2002 and 2007 cut capacity from 41,000 to under 10,000. Crowd trouble in 2004 fixed the figure at 7,500; by closure it had settled near 9,300.
