VTB Arena — Central Stadium 'Dynamo' named after Lev Yashin

The name on the paperwork ends with a goalkeeper: VTB Arena — Central Stadium 'Dynamo' named after Lev Yashin. The ground it replaced stood on the same plot on Leningradsky Prospekt from 1928 until 2012, built to a design by Arkady Langman and Lazar Cherikover.

What went up in its place came from two drawing boards: the Dutch architect Erik van Egeraat set the concept, the American David Manica took it to final design. The sporting part, parking included, cost somewhere between 650 and 700 million dollars; the wider complex around it ran to 1.5 billion.

The building was cleared for use on 27 November 2018 and opened three weeks later, on 20 December, with an ice show. Football had to wait: the first match here was played on 26 May 2019, five months after the doors first opened. The pitch is hybrid Desso GrassMaster, laid over undersoil heating.

The fullest it has been was 20 August 2022, against Spartak: 25,249 through the turnstiles for a 3:1 win, a few hundred short of the 25,716 the ground holds. Concerts fill the calendar between matches — Scorpions in November 2019, Aerosmith in July 2022.
