«The Guards»
The identity underneath those banners has shifted more than most in the American League. What started in 1896 as the Columbus Buckeyes in the Western League relocated to Cleveland in 1900 and became a charter member of the American League the following year as the Bluebirds, then spent over a decade as the Naps before more than a century under the Indians name. The Guardians name arrived in 2022, closing out a lineage of rebrandings.
The Detroit Tigers remain the standing rival, a fixture of the American League Central sharpened less by any single title race than by the two cities sitting a few hours apart on Lake Erie's southern shore.
Progressive Field now seats 34,820, the smallest capacity in Major League Baseball after renovation work trimmed the bowl down.
