Gil Eanes Women

ZRK Vardar Skopje came to Lagos in the 2001–02 EHF Challenge Cup as the bigger name, one of the powers of Macedonian handball, and left having conceded 25 goals in the school hall Gil Eanes call home. The 25–13 win still stands as the highest point of the club's run in Europe; a defeat to the German side BSV Buxtehude in the same semi-final ended that campaign, and no later entry into the EHF Cup, the Cup Winners' Cup or Champions League qualifying between 2002 and 2011 got the club as far again.

Gil Eanes went into those European draws on the strength of what it had already built at home in Lagos. The club, founded in 1987, won the 1ª Divisão Feminina in the 2009–10 season, and carried that into the following season's Supertaça de Portugal Feminina as league champions, only to lose to Madeira SAD, who arrived as Cup winners.

That title-winning generation is remembered above all through Ana Seabra, named the best player in the Portuguese league in 2011–12, with Vera Lopes also part of the side from that era. Blue and white remain the club's colours, worn at the Pavilhão da Escola Secundária Gil Eanes, the school sports hall in Lagos it still calls home.
