Alavarium Women

The Pavilhão Municipal Mariana Lopes carries the name of a Portugal international who came through the Aveiro club, adopted after a renovation in January 2024. Playing under that name is itself a marker of where Alavarium stands: back at the top of Portuguese women's handball after the season the pavilion was renamed.

Andebol Clube Alavarium, founded in 1989, built its identity in a short, sharp run rather than a long accumulation. Between 2011–12 and 2013–14 the club took the national title three years running. Ana Seabra, named the league's best player in that first championship season, went on to earn 176 caps for Portugal. Mónica Soares and Neide Duarte carried the honour in the two seasons that followed, both while wearing the national shirt as well as the club's white and red.

The Taça de Portugal never quite followed: Alavarium reached the final in 2013–14 and lost it. European handball came briefly into view too, with a EHF Challenge Cup tie against Granollers in 2021–22.

Aveiro handball has its own local fault line, and Alavarium's side of it runs against CD Feirense, both clubs from the Aveiro district, in what is known locally as the derby distrital. The task now is holding that place, not simply having reached it.
