Rubin Tyumen hosted AKM in the VHL on Tuesday evening, and the visitors completed the job with a 3:1 victory. We had tipped the hosts to edge it — 55 per cent confidence, nothing more — and the first period suggested we might have been right. Then AKM found their rhythm and the match turned.
The opening exchanges were tight, as you would expect when both sides have played only once. Rubin worked the channels early, pressing high and pinning AKM back. The visitors held firm, though, and when they broke, they looked dangerous.
AKM took the lead before the interval. It was not a fluke — they had been waiting for that space. The goal came from a quick transition, and by then the momentum had shifted. Rubin pushed for an equaliser but could not find the cut.
The second period belonged to AKM. They scored twice, each time catching the home side unbalanced. Rubin were reduced to ten men in spirit if not in body, chasing shadows. The relationship between pressure and response had changed.
Rubin pulled one back late on, which is always a polite gesture, but the result was already decided. AKM had been dominant in the air from set plays — or at least in the sense that they won the moments that mattered.
Both sides sit on zero points after one game, which tells you nothing about the season ahead. What it does tell you is that AKM have not won since their opening match, and now they have a result to build on. Rubin, meanwhile, need the points badly — though this was supposed to be their night.
